Making the Best Use of Your Money and Your AssetsMonday, June 10, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Three local financial specialists will present a program entitled “Making the Best Use of Your Money and Your Assets.” Bernadine Shea, M.Ed. and owner of The Money Organizer, will discuss the meaning and importance of credit and credit scores. Shea, a Certified Personal Finance Educator, holds a paralegal litigation certificate, and regularly attends conferences and educational programs to stay current in her field. She is a member of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE) and works with various organizations helping clients to understand how to better manage their personal finances. Lorraine Sanborn will speak on irrevocable funeral trusts, and ways to pay for funerals. Sanborn is founder of Sanborn consultants, and is a life insurance expert and independent agent. She is founder and president of freshconnections, inc, a non-profit business networking organization for women with chapters in southeastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. Ron Pueschel is a Reverse Mortgage Professional with Security 1 Lending, one of the nation's largest reverse mortgage lenders. Pueschel, a 30-year senior executive, will present a fact-based review of the benefits of today's government insured reverse mortgages including some of the program's newest options. Pueschel is a board member and advisor for a number of non-profit organizations in Connecticut. There will be a question and answer period and coffee and dessert will be provided. Walk-ins are welcome. ---------------------------- Chelsea Groton Bank Sponsoring Free Shred-It EventSaturday, May 11, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Chelsea Groton Bank is sponsoring a free shredding event at the Mystic & Noank Library. A Shred-It truck will be in the library parking lot and will accept any papers for safe and convenient disposal. Staples may remain on papers. The Library is located at 40 Library Street, Mystic, CT; the parking lot is on Elm Street. The Library cannot accept papers for shredding before the date of the event, and participants must dispose of plastic bags and boxes. This event is free and open to the community. ---------------------------- Four Seasons, Four ViewsArt in the Ames Room - April 2013 The four artists are members of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society and exhibit throughout Connecticut and New England. Four Seasons, Four Views are works done in pastels, watercolors and oils, and many feature local scenes. ---------------------------- New Spring Garden Series Starts!Kathleen O’Beirne, author and avid gardener, will kick off a Gardening Series at the Mystic & Noank Library on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. O’Beirne’s presentation, “How to Double Your Pleasure from Your Garden,” will take selections from her book, Gardening: A Window on Our Soul, and will focus a hands-on activity around designing the ideal garden tool, both practical and whimsical. On Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m., Ian Cooke will speak on “Starting a Neighborhood Garden.” Cooke is a professional horticulturalist from England now living in Mystic. He planned and organizes the Community Garden on Mason’s Island. Cooke will discuss the success, and pitfalls, of creating a neighborhood community garden. On Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m., Chad Jones will speak about “Local Species from Connecticut College’s Charles Graves Herbarium Collection.” Jones, the George and Carol Milne Assistant Professor of Life Science, Department of Botany and Environmental Studies Program at Connecticut College, will introduce us to the college’s herbarium collection: What it is and how it is used for education. A selection of prints of the Herbarium collection will be on exhibit in the Ames Room. ---------------------------- National Library Week April 14 - 20, 2013We've got lots going on this week! ---------------------------- AARP Spring Safe Driver ClassTuesday, April 23, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The Mystic & Noank Library is hosting an AARP Safe Driver program. The course fee is $12 for AARP members, $14 for non-members and is payable by check or cash at the first class. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion the class, which may reduce automobile insurance premiums. There will be no actual driving during the classes. ---------------------------- Author Lisa Saunders at the LibraryOn Tuesday, December 11, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Mystic author Lisa Saunders will give a brief presentation at the Mystic & Noank Library based on her new book, Mystic Seafarer’s Trail. This memoir is a humorous and historical look at the haunts and homes of Mystic's noted seafarers--living and dead. Lisa Saunders is an award-winning writer living in Mystic, Connecticut, with her husband and beagle/basset hound. A graduate of Cornell University, she is the author of several books and works as a part-time history interpreter at Mystic Seaport. She is a member of the Mystic River Historical Society and Daughters of the American Revolution (Anna Warner Bailey Chapter), and is the parent representative for the Congenital CMV Foundation. The evening includes a slide presentation, light refreshments, and book signing. A portion of book sales will benefit the Library. Pena, LCSW, on Monday, December 10 at 6:30 p.m. entitled Children and the Loss of their Pet Companion. The loss of a pet is often a child’s first experience with death. Children ask questions. Brief answers that are to the point are good enough to satisfy the child’s questions and curiosity; the goal is to leave the door open for further dialogue. Children’s understanding of death depends on their developmental stage. This presentation will give parents and caregivers a “How To” guide in navigating children’s questions about loss and death. Alicia Pena is a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker with many years experience working with children and families of diverse composition. Her Person-Centered therapeutic approach focuses on the individual’s history. Ms. Pena holds advance certifications in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction from University of Massachusetts Medical School and End of Life and Palliative Care from Smith College. She has completed 30 hours of post-graduate work on End of Life and Palliative Care from Harvard University Medical School. Ms. Pena did a Clinical Internship at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT and is currently a volunteer for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut. She has made numerous presentations on issues of children, women and the LGBT community. Mary Jo Riley heads the Groton Senior Center, a recreation center for residents and nonresidents over age 55.
